Equities Market
Consumer Discretionary
The Consumer Discretionary sector covers the media, gaming and discretionary retailing industries and accounts for 10% of the S&P/ASX200 by value. The media sector is dominated by the national TV and newspaper publishing companies, in particular PBL, Seven, Ten and Fairfax. The gaming sector is dominated by Tabcorp, Aristocrat and UNiTAB. The discretionary retailing sector includes companies such as Harvey Norman, David Jones and Billabong.
Consumer Staples
The Consumer Staples sector covers food and liquor retailing and food and beverage manufacturing and accounts for 7% of the S&P/ASX200 by value. The major retailers are Coles Myer and Woolworths. The major food and beverage manufacturers are Coca-Cola Amatil, Fosters and Lion Nathan.
Emerging Companies
Emerging Companies are those companies outside of the top 100, representing about 1700 companies listed on the ASX. Emerging Companies can provide excess return to a portfolio as they are usually more nimble and able to adjust their business strategy more quickly than their larger peers.
Equity Economics
CommSec's Equity Economics team interpret ‘big picture’ economic and financial trends and undertake regular presentations to staff and customers, prepare commentaries on economic matters for the media, and produce regular and ad hoc commentaries and topical reports of market interest.
Financials
Financials is the largest sector in the ASX and accounts for 33% of the S&P/ASX200 by value. This sector includes banks, insurers and wealth management companies. The major banks are CBA, NAB, Westpac, ANZ and St George. The major insurers are IAG, Promina, QBE and Suncorp. The major wealth management companies are AMP and AXA.
Healthcare
The healthcare sector includes healthcare equipment and service providers as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. It accounts for 3% of the S&P/ASX 200 by value. The healthcare sector is heavily regulated by Federal and State Governments. It is dominated by healthcare equipment and service providers including CSL, COH, HSP & RHC.
Industrials
The Industrials sector covers a wide range of manufacturing and transportation companies and accounts for 8% of the S&P/ASX200 by value. The major companies are Wesfarmers, Brambles, Macquarie Infrastructure Group, Qantas, Toll Holdings and Transurban.
Resources
Our Resources coverage includes the key energy and materials companies from the oil and gas exploration, production, refining, building materials sector. The resources sector accounts for 3% of the S&P/ASX200 by value and the materials sectors accounts for 19% of the S&P/ASX200 by value. The largest resources companies are Woodside Petroleum, Santos, Caltex, Origin Energy, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and WMC Resources and the major building materials companies are Boral, Rinker and James Hardie.
Strategy

28 August 2008 - AEST 8.30am - USD ended European and US sessions only modestly firmer from the Asian close - Euro eased from levels around US$1.4775 in European trade to around US$1.4670 ending US trade near US$1.4730 - AUD fell from highs of US86.35c to US85.35c ending US trade near US85.85c - JPY weakened from 108.70 yen per US dollar to JPY109.90 ending at JPY109.50 - US share markets posted solid gains on Wednesday investors comforted by solid business spending data - The Dow Jones index rose by almost 90pts or 0.8pct - The Nasdaq lifted by 20pts or 0.9pct - Trading in Fannie Mae was halted and an announcement was made - US 10yr yields eased 1pt to 3.77pct while US 2yr yields fell by 4pts to 2.29pct - The September Nymex crude oil quote rose by US$1.88 or 1.6pct to US$118.15 - London Brent rose by US$1.59 to US$116.22 a barrel - base metal prices posted solid gains on the London Metal Exchange on Wednesday - The price of gold was also higher on Wednesday benefiting from a renewed investor push into commodities.
